GGG (Graffiti Gone Global) launches its fourth consecutive year with an exhibition of street and graffiti art running parallel to Art Basel Miami Beach. Entitled Fresh Produce, the exhibition presents a selection of international artists whose work blurs the line between the street and the gallery, and whose practice has excelled beyond the typical notion of “graffiti.” Produced in collaboration with Primary Flight, Fresh Produce is curated by Cristina Gonzalez — aka She Kills He — and includes a collaboration with Operation Design and a new sculptural installation by the Dutch art duo Haas&Hahn. The exhibition will be housed in a 7,000-square-foot venue in the Wynwood Arts District and will run from December 1 thru 5, 2010.
GGG’s Fresh Produce is a multifaceted exhibition that examines the influences of urban aesthetics and the emergence of street art into the commercial market, a phenomenon that has grown steadily in the past few years. In the words of Cristina Gonzalez and Books Bischof of Primary Flight, GGG is about “the cultivation of culture, movement and flavor in an effort to collect, document and experiment with contemporary urban artists from around the globe.” GGG is powered by SUSHISAMBA and is the brainchild of its founder, Shimon Bokovza, who has consistently demonstrated his support for street artists. In addition to producing and underwriting previous exhibitions such as Ginza Tropicalia, he has commissioned site-specific street art in SUSHISAMBA restaurants throughout the country. “We would only call upon the best talent to execute a dream that was sparked with the inception of Art Basel Miami Beach,” Bokovza says.
Artists included in GGG’s Fresh Produce are: Haas&Hahn, The London Police, REVOK, Erik Otto, Skewville, Pepa Prieto, Augustine Kofie, Alëxone, Kenton Parker, Tes One, BASK, Dolla, Jim Darling, Dabs & Myla, Stormie Mills, Michael De Feo, Andrew Holder, Jack Hudson, Tristan Eaton, Tatiana Suarez, Surge, Jersey Joe, REMeD, Parskid, Logan Hicks, Escif, Depoe, Remi/Rough, Ryan Bubnis, Mike Perry, Reyes and from the Family Baglione: Flip, Sesper, Thais Beltrame and Herbert Baglione. A full list of participants is available on GGG’s website, www.gggexhibit.com.
GGG demonstrates the transformation of what was once viewed as a rogue art form into a practice that has exceeded its barriers into established realms of contemporary visual culture. As an example of how this progression has manifested, GGG has commissioned Dutch art duo Haas&Hahn to create a new large-scale sculptural installation that mimics the sprawling, modular structure of Brazil’s favelas. This work originated earlier in “Favela Painting” (www.favelapainting.com), a project where the artists worked with local youth in Rio de Jainero to transform a section of favelas into a wave of color. The new 25-foot-high installation will occupy the central space of the exhibition.
To complement the presentation, GGG’s Fresh Produce will highlight a unique “Eames Inspiration” collection of iconic Eames® Molded Plywood Chairs as re-imagined by some of today’s most celebrated graffiti and street artists. “Eames Inspiration” was displayed this past May in Barneys’ famous windows in New York by Simon Doonan and auctioned online to benefit Operation Design — a creative mentorship program that organizes architects, artists and related talents to work with New York City public school students to create motivating and inspiring projects. The collection was purchased at a public auction by SUSHISAMBA and Fresh Produce will give the public an opportunity to view it in its entirety for the first time since last spring.
Continuing its partnership with Operation Design, SUSHISAMBA is a proud sponsor of this year’s “ The Doors” project. Professional artists worked one-on-one with nearly 60 high school students to redesign classroom doors in order to enhance the school’s hallways with the 30 new works of art. GGG will host a selection of these new works and SUSHISAMBA will sponsor a trip for the two participating students and their art teachers to attend Fresh Produce.
Finally, GGG will further promote the “fresh” motto by presenting a version of a farmer’s market that will include original artworks and merchandise — along with, appropriately, fresh fruits and vegetables — available for purchase.
A hardcover Fresh Produce book, which highlights all aspects of the exhibition, is available for purchase.
Special thanks to GGG’s Host Committee: Julia Coleman, Martha Cooper, Calum Sutton, Terence Riley, Kathryn & Dan Mikesell, Sara Meltzer, Judy Caron, Leon Benrimon, Megan Riley, and Christopher & Elizabeth Apgar.
